Chapter Eight

After we filled Nina in on my sickness, she gave us the keys to the golf cart Liam rented for us to get around the island on, and then directions to the Bluebird Inn where we were staying. It was a short ride from the welcome center to the inn. Once we’d checked in, we met up with Kai and Nina at a local eatery called Island Point for dinner.

The place was small and weathered, but it still had charm. I could tell right away locals frequented the place most by the way people stared at Liam and me when we walked in. Silence rippled through the place as more spotted us while we made our way to the table where Nina and Kai sat in the back corner.

Was everyone’s silence and awkward stares because we were tourists in a local place or because we were bears in gator territory?

Liam’s grip on my hand tightened. His jaw tensed, and I could see the veins corded in his neck pulsing with his heartbeat. His bear was near the surface, and he was having a hard time taming him. I was struggling with mine too.

“Relax, y’all,” Kai shouted through cupped hands to everyone in the place. “They’re here because I asked them to be.”

Murmurs ripped through the place. Bears… here… in our territory. Probably here for no good reason… just like the others that come strolling through. Look at their eyes… they’re up to no good. I swallowed hard, trying to keep a neutral expression on my face while at the same time reining in my bear. She didn’t like this—being surrounded by so many territorial shifters in an unfamiliar place. Liam squeezed my hand, offering us comfort.

It didn’t help.

“Have a seat,” Kai said, gesturing to the two scuffed-up wooden chairs with lopsided cushions tied to them. “They’ll settle down in a minute.”

“Thanks,” Liam said.

He pulled out my chair first and motioned for me to sit before situating himself in the empty chair beside me. It was a sweet gesture, but one I knew had been done out of a simple need to protect me rather than chivalry. His bear needed to know I was close and safe. I knew this because mine felt the same about him.

“I ordered a pitcher. Feel free to help yourselves to a glass or two. Mabel will bring us another when this one is gone. Or, if you’re not a beer drinker,” Kai said, directing his attention to me. “Order whatever you like. I’m buyin’.”

“Damn right you are,” Nina said with a smirk. “Which is why I ordered the most expensive drink on the menu and plan to do the same with my meal. You owe me.”

Mischief glimmered in Kai’s eyes as a smirk twisted his lips. “I know, but it was worth it.”

“Jerk. I was late for work this morning cleaning up that crap. Old Mr. Renalds nearly bit my head off because of you.” She slapped him on the arm with the back of her hand.
